The government offers a second chance to students unable to continue their studies or attend the final ministerial exams due to unforeseen circumstances. This program allows them to complete their education and achieve their academic goals.
Throughout this article, we will outline the requirements, process, and necessary documentation to sit for external exams.
Five Conditions to apply for external exams:
- You must be 18 years of age or older.
- You have to take the exam in your governorate.
- If you have finished the first year of middle or high school, you have to wait for two years before applying for the external exam.
- If you have finished the second year of middle or high school, you have to wait for one year before applying for the external exam.
- You have the right to switch between the scientific and literary sections of study if you have completed the first or second years of high school.
Required documents to apply for external exams:
- Iraqi ID or the Unified National Card (original and copy)
- Iraqi Nationality Certificate (original and copy)
- Provide 8 personal Photos (white background)
- Residence Card (original and copy)
- Application Form (As shown in the photo below). Visit the Ministry of Education website (click here) to find out when the application form access will reopen.
* The application form for the External exams will usually be available on the Ministry of Education website from November to December. Note that the dates may change according to ministry regulations. (you can find also the application form in hard copy at the shops near the Ministry)
- School record: to be obtained from your last school
- A statement from the school principal to declare what was the last year that you attended.
Note: Upon collecting the documents, make sure to carefully review them before you submit them to the Ministry of Education.
- Receipt from the financial office of the Directorate of education in your governorate.
* you will need to pay 50,000 IQD (For High school) or 25,000 IQD (For middle school).

Seven steps to apply for an external exam:
- If the conditions mentioned above apply to you, you will need to attach all the documents mentioned above in one file
- Go to the Directorate of Education of your governorate and give the file to the competent employee.
- You will need to wait for your application and exam date confirmation until the list of accepted applicants is published.
- It is important to regularly check the Ministry of Education website (click here) for updates on the exam dates, the date to receive your examination card, and the location of the exam.
- After finishing the external exam, the Ministry of Education will publish a list of names of the students that passed the exam on their website or Facebook page.
- If you are applying for a high school exam, your grade is one of the following:
- Pass
- Failed one subject
- Failed two subjects
- Failed three subjects
You will have the opportunity to participate in the ministerial high school exams in May\June of each year.
- As for the Middle year external exam, if your grading is one of the following:
- Pass
- Failed one subject
- Failed two subjects
You will have the opportunity to participate in the ministerial Middle school ministry exams in May\June of each year.
If you fail your first attempt, you have the right to apply again up to five more times.
